Hello and welcome to the blog. I will be using this website to post progress and finished projects. First, I thought I'd mention a little about the background.
I moved up to Hessel, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, in September of 2011. There isn't a lot of work up here, so aside from doing odd jobs for area residents and a part-time job at a local grocery store, I've also started building rustic furniture in my spare time.
How it works: I've put the word out around town, that I'm in need of any scrap wood, or old furniture that might be able to be salvaged. I've been refused payment for any of it, so I work mostly with donations --- an old, broken coffee table that had been sitting in a barn, a small particle board table that had been sitting in someone's garage, and (by now) a pretty large collection of unwanted wood. I also make the occasional trek into the woods to cut down a few trees, then cut them up and leave them to dry and be used later.
When it comes to tools, I started out with a small hand saw, an old, rusted hammer and some nails. By now, I have an electric drill, a draw knife, a couple chisels, a jigsaw, a finishing sander, and a small electric chainsaw.
I have pictures of the projects I've finished so far, and will be posting them shortly. Now that I've bought a new charger for my camera, I will be able to post pictures of new projects as I build them, to give a little behind-the-scenes look. I will (hopefully) be selling these pieces at the local flea market when summer comes back around, but for now, I'll have to figure something else out. I might be able to work something out with a couple of the shops around here, but I'd prefer to sell them directly.
